Recently there has been an abnormal amount of debate about Daylight Savings, whether we should keep it or toss it. Personally, I'm team DS. Why? Here in Colorado the sun rises at 5:30am during Daylight Savings, and we've already moved the clock ahead an hour. Which means IF Colorado got rid of it, the sun would be rising at 4:30AM in the summer! Oy! For those who wake with the sun, this makes for very early mornings. And for those with toddlers who wake with the sun, well, good luck. So I see it as a small obstacle to enjoy my warm evenings, and my extra hour of darkness in the mornings.
I started this back when my kids were young, and in school of course. Parents of school age children will tell you when the clocks change in the spring, that first Monday getting ready for school is a bugger! Give it a few days and we're back on track, right? One year I decided to give my family an extra day to get prepped and it made such a difference, I still do it and they're all out on their own now, but I enjoy the extra day to adjust.
What's my secret sauce? It's really very simple. I change the clocks ahead that magical hour during the commute home on FRIDAY afternoon/evening. So when the boys were in school that was 3pm on Friday, now it's 5pm. Of course, since I needed them to go to bed earlier on a Friday night, we went to the park and wore them out, then we would come home to a pizza & movie night at home. An evening out of the ordinary, also no weekly tv shows on a regular schedule to clue them into mom's change. Saturday morning, I would have something scheduled to get them up the same time they do for school, making that first morning Saturday instead of Monday... Of course on Saturday they would always remind me to set the clocks ahead, I would just wink and smile, and say, "I got it under control."
By the time Monday morning rolls around, it was our third morning on the time change and it wasn't nearly as miserable as when we would change the clocks on Sunday morning. I still like it because it gives my body clock time to adjust, remember to wear yourself out on Friday, go to bed a little early and the rest of the week will be so much easier to deal with. Just remember to set any appointments for Friday night or Saturday for the appropriate time on your calendars so that you're not an hour early!
